The implications of green hydrogen for SA grain growers (SAN121)

START

July 1, 2021

FINISH

June 30, 2023

Summary

With green hydrogen providing potential opportunities for grain growers, a range of videos, fact sheets and a conference presentation were developed to increase growers understanding of the industry and opportunities. This project has raised the awareness of how nitrogen fertiliser is manufactured, and the emerging renewable and distributed methods for nitrogen production in which growers might directly participate.

Background

Various methods exist to generate green hydrogen and renewable nitrogen fertilisers. Pilot plants and industry demonstration plants are being deployed around the world and South Australian grain growers are likely to be able to participate in renewable nitrogen fertiliser manufacturing within the next decade.

Research Aims

The objective of this project was to increase SA grain growers’ awareness and knowledge of green hydrogen and renewable nitrogen fertiliser opportunities.

In The Field

Nine factsheets were developed, on natural rhizobia, natural lightning, steam methane reforming, Haber Bosch process, electrolysis, biomass gasification, biocatalyst, methane pyrolysis and non-thermal plasma.

Two videos on green hydrogen, a short video on and a webinar, were developed and uploaded to YouTube.

Results

Growers looking to learn more about green hydrogen or renewable nitrogen fertiliser can access the nine fact sheets and watch the two videos developed for this project.

The fact sheets are available on the SAGIT website:

The Problem

Green hydrogen presents emerging opportunities for grain growers in South Australia but awareness and knowledge of the opportunities is limited.

The research

A series of fact sheets, videos and a conference presentation were developed to increase grower awareness and knowledge of green hydrogen.

    Value for Growers

The two videos produced as part of this project can be found on Youtube:

    1. Introductory video with HydGene (7 minutes’ duration)
    2. Green Hydrogen Webinar (34 minutes’ duration)

A presentation was given at the 2022 SANTFA conference.
