Upper North: Time of Sowing and Yield Loss from Frost/Heat Stress (UNF116)
The Upper North Agricultural Region of SA is frequently affected by hot dry springs, significant frost events and unreliable opening rains. Identifying the window of least risk for sowing and increasing the knowledge of the farmers to different wheat phenology will increase profitability and enable management through seasonal variation.
Sulphur deficiency research in lentils & wheat: dune swale soils (NSS114)
Additions of sulphate of ammonia and gypsum were tested on crop growth, yield and soil test results in 2015 and 2016.
Quantifying productivity and profitability gains with liquid injection systems on clayed sands (ELD215)
Different rates of liquid phosphorus were tested near Bordertown in 2015.
Evaluating the agronomic and financial benefits of P-efficient cereal varieties (UA1201)
This project was designed to quantify the economic benefit to growers in different rainfall zones of growing wheat and barley varieties that potentially differ in their phosphorus use efficiency (PUE).
Heat research study trip to America (AGT114)
This trip enabled visits to research groups at Texas A&M University, Limagrain Cereal Seeds (LCS) in Colorado and the CIMMYT research centre, Mexico. Industry and research links have been developed which will be beneficial to future research and study outputs.
Potential N supply and mineralisation as predicted by DGT (UA314)
DGT is a new measurement technique that could potentially provide a more accurate alternative to current N measurement methods. Results were compared with current N methods.
Cost-effective doubled haploids for accelerating wheat and oat breeding (S0311)
Development of more efficient and cheaper methods for doubled haploid production in wheat and oats, using the isolated microspore culture (IMC) technique
Ultra-high-pressure injection to increase fungicide efficiency (SANF1201)
Ultra-high pressure (UHP) injection of fungicide was used to improve fungicide efficacy on rhizoctonia in wheat.
